30 Days of Gorgeous || Studio Open Day

mum and daughter experience for mothers day I’m so excited!

I’m kicking off my 30 Days of Gorgeous campaign for the month of June. I’ll be booking in 30 complimentary beauty-portrait sessions and share each woman’s story, one a day for every day in June.

Why?

There are so many women who need some encouragement to find ourselves again. My job is to help reveal your inner spark, and I want to transform your life through the experience of portraiture in my Blackwood studio. The sessions will be complimentary, and hair and makeup optional with two printed portraits thrown in as my gift.

But what’s the catch?

Ha! there’s always a catch isn’t there! Each brave applicant will be asked to fill in a questionnaire and be prepared to have your story shared on the blog. If there are more than 30 applicants, I’ll choose based on the people I feel will most benefit from one of my sessions.

More information and information about how to apply will be posted tomorrow.

Tanya Heath of Blackwood Natural and Remedial Solutions got in touch recently for some professional headshots for her business. She needed to update her professional branding for Facebook.

She wanted to create images that were professional, but not studio based. Tanya also wanted her images to emphasize her approachable, gentle and knowledgeable personality.

Ultimate Mother and Daughter Day Out || Eden Hills Portrait Photographer

I love photographing mums and daughters. Carolyn and her teenaged daughter Iona had a fabulous day out together in the studio, with Carolyn’s husband gifting them the experience. They could remember having had portraits once before a few years ago and were thrilled at the idea of updating their photos with some favourite colours and wardrobe pieces. The pair went shopping for white shirts or blouses they could wear with jeans to coordinate with each other, but returned with identical hers-and-hers sixties mod-inspired graphical print dresses, which photographed beautifully!

ultimate girls day out

Carolyn had her hair cut and coloured especially for the photo shoot and chose a gentle wave styled through her hair, while Iona’s long blonde hair was given a stronger curl to withstand being blowed for one of the shots!

Iona and Carolyn are bookworms, loving reading as well as writing, and Iona brought in some vintage books and her vintage typewriter from home to be included in their photoshoot. We even included a precious hand written note from a close family member in one of the images.

Then and Now || Adelaide portrait photographer

I’ve just gone through a major personal change. It’s the first time since a brief experiment when I was about 21.

This was me about almost two years ago, taken by the beautiful talented Nadio Marlow at Earthbound Studio.

And this is me now (or last week on Date Night!):

pixie hair cut photo

Yes I’ve had my long hair chopped off. It’s the first time since in oh, about 22 years that I’ve had it short and guess what. I LOVE it. I really do! Kudos to Hair by Brooke Willcock for giving me this fantastic little pixie cut. I think it’s here to stay!

So I’ve booked in Nadia to update my headshot portrait next week. I can’t wait!

A new career direction for Jo || Adelaide professional headshots

Joanne, a Mt Barker Mum, took the initiative and submitted a presentation to the Asia Pacific Autism Conference 2015, and it was accepted. On the back of this she was invited to participate in another event interstate. The event organisers required a business headshot, and Joanne decided it was time to get hers updated professionally.

She was unsure initially about getting hair and makeup done, asking if it would “still be her” in the images. She agreed to book in both hair with Travis and makeup with Krista, once I assured her she would still look like herself in the images!

With the professional head shots package, hair styling and professional makeup are included as part of the service.

Christmas party for special children at the Adelaide Zoo 2013

We were lucky enough to be given a ticket for Angus this year (thanks Disability SA) and wow! what a fantastic day we had. The children arrive at the zoo and are given a little band which goes around their wrist showing icons – icecream, drink, sausage, gift bag, present. These show the children visually what they will receive – it’s just a great idea and so well organised. I’m so grateful to the Salvation Army, and all the sponsors and volunteers who contribute to this wonderful day. Here are some images from the day:

Family portrait session at Belair National Park – Adventure Playground

I had the absolute pleasure of photographing this beautiful family at Belair National Park – Adventure Playground. Even a light rainfall didn’t bother the kids – they had a gorgeous time on the swings, the flying fox (always a firm favourite) and a few laps running around the fort. I’m so glad there’s a fort for rainy days.

The funniest moment was when an emu strolled casually past us, right beside the playground.

What do they say – working with children and animals – never a dull moment!

How to shoot a self-portrait

I’ve had a lot of fun this week finding dresses to wear for Frocktober – but because i don’t have 31 for each day in the month, I’ve had to beg and borrow from my sister who luckily has a few items in her wardrobe that fit me. Just. I’ve decided to take self-portraits of myself this week to show the dresses I am wearing each day. If you have the right gear, the easiest way to do this is to set up a tripod, and a mirror. My camera is a Canon DSLR with a timer function, but many point-and-shoot cameras have this functionality too. I’m sure you can probably do it with a smartphone – there’s an app for that!

Ideally you would use a mirror so you can see how you look before you take the shot. I don’t have one so I just guess – it’s more fun this way anyway! If you set up a timer, it allows a few seconds so you can run back to your spot and pose, and have the camera take say 10 shots at once. I have a remote control trigger so I press the button when I’m ready for the shot and I have it set up to wait 2 seconds so I can hide the trigger before the shot is taken.

This is a fantastic exercise: photographers often take self-portraits when they are experimenting with different looks and it’s a photography genre in itself. But it’s also a GREAT way of developing confidence. I’m sharing the nine shots from today’s shoot to show you how hit and miss it is, and how the right angle and lighting can make a fantastic photo! If you’re someone who’s very uneasy about being in front of the camera, this is a fantastic way to find out how to pose yourself.

Many clients who come to my studio for their photography sessions are very nervous and anxious about how they will look in their photos. Let’s face it, if you’ve hated how you look in just one photo, this can be enough to put anyone off for a lifetime! I pose my subjects very deliberately in diffused natural light from the studio window and create the most beautiful photographs this way. It’s a great way to develop confidence, with each beautiful image!
